newbie Question

when I was Young (12 to 15YO.) I hunted with My grandpa and owned a couple long guns. But not for the last 30 years

So im kind of a Newbie
Here's my Question
we just got a Ruger 10/22 rifle
Out of over twenty 10 round clips. One time My wife Pulled back the bolt to load the 1st round in the chamber and it got stuck open, So she handed the gun to me. I looked inside and Noticed the bullet was stuck Half way to the cylinder and was buckling and bending so the lead was coming off the shell slightly.

I pulled back the Bolt and shook out the round
then Pulled back the bolt and the next round loaded fine.

Anyone know what im trying to say?
Has this happened to any of you?
How Do i dispose of this Damaged round?

How should I handle this if it happens again?

Thanks Guys!

New rifle? Needs shooting in a bit to loosen things up...new rotary mag springs may be a little stiff, especially with the first round out of a fully loaded mag.

Type of ammo? Soft lead-tip ammo might do this on occasion...if it continues try switching to ammo with copper-jacket or copper-wash bullets like CCI mini-mag, etc.

Also, make sure you pull back the bolt all the way and "let fly"...in other words, don't be too gentle when cycling/closing the bolt. You can also manually push the bolt forward to close it on a somewhat reluctant round.

Your damaged bullet may still chamber and shoot...or you can pull the bullet off with a pair of pliers, pour out the powder, toss the rest away...

Yes, Brand new rifle
I'm sure my wife did not "let it fly"

Howdy Tech Guy. Yeah...No. We were at home in the Yard.
I put it in a coffee can..I'll take it apart and dump the powder like SC said.
Ive done that before years ago as a Kid just so I could Lite the gun powder...lol...Dumb kid

You chose a fine rifle. As others have said you need to break it in. Don't be gentle with it, the rifle can take it. Just put a few hundred rounds through it, it will be fine.I recommend new shooters use reactive targets like a Coke can or if you don't mind the broken glass, a bottle. A target that jumps when hit makes shooting more fun!

And we look though Binoculars while the other person shoots to tell them where they hit

Tons of Fun!!
Need to get more ammo for sure!

Back in the day, I bought a Ruger 10/22 and had the same problem, I took it back and got a Marlin (Forget the model#) the most recognizable one, with the tubular mag under the barrel, it would hold 17 or 18 rounds too...if I remember correctly, had a little 3X scope on it, was a lot of fun.....would never jam

*Just checked, it was a model 60 and would hold 14 rounds
